Kelly’s nana is a huge part of her life, she would say her "partner in crime." Andrew knew if he was going to pull off a surprise proposal, Nana had to be there. He made nana a shirt that said, “Will you marry Andrew?” and had her hide in the bathroom. Often when a surprise proposal is planned, a snafu can occur. When Kelly tried to reach Nana and could not, she became pre-occupied with Nana's well-being. When Nana emerged from the bathroom proudly sporting her new tee, Kelly hardly noticed the tee as she was so relieved Nana was all right. The video captures Kelly's expression of worry and concern, not quite the reaction Andrew was hoping for. Once Kelly realized what was really happening, she assured Andrew the surprise was perfect, and she happily said "yes" to Nana's t-shirt!
Family is very important to the couple, so they represented their loved ones with many personal touches. Since Kelly's dad and grandfather had passed away, she longed for something special to remember them. Her mom surprised her with her grandpa's handkerchief as well as a letter her father had written. She traced and embroidered part of the letter onto the handkerchief for Kelly to carry with her. Kelly decorated with pieces Nana had crocheted along with some of the sea shells her grandparents had collected in their travels. She also decorated with a thousand paper cranes to commemorate the trip she and Andrew had taken to Japan before their wedding. And since both Kelly and Andrew are designers, they wanted to display their own artwork that symbolized them as individuals and as a couple. They had a large gallery wall of prints.
Finally the flowers were very important to Kelly. She grew up in Hawaii and wanted to make sure there were traditional Hawaiian flowers and leis at the ceremony. She ordered leis straight from Hawaii and worked with her florist to order tropical flowers for her bouquet and centerpieces. The couple did two lei ceremonies during the wedding, one to represent them as a couple and one for their family. No details were left unturned and when Kelly walked down the aisle with her Mother and Nana, she married Andrew surrounded by the love of family and friends.
